NFL lifer Ernie Accorsi will join the Bears as a consultant.

More from Chicago Bears

After “Black Monday,” four NFL teams are currently without head coaches: The New York Jets, San Francisco 49ers, Atlanta Falcons and the Chicago Bears. The Jets and the Bears are also without general managers after John Idzik and Phil Emery received the ax today.

While in New York Woody Johnson has already announced the hiring of his Charley Casserly as consultant, Chicago has now done the same by bringing in football-lifer Ernie Accorsi.

Bears Chairman George McCaskey told us today that they were bringing on Accorsi as consultant during their end of season press conference. CEO Ted Phillips also announced that for now they’ll retain all coaches aside from the already fired Mark Trestman and offensive coordinator Aaron Kromer.

Accorsi has seen his fair share of success in the league. He was the man who traded up to nab Eli Manning for the New York Giants in 2004, and the guy who most consider to be the architect of the Giants two latest championships. His career spans back to 1970 with the Baltimore Colts when Johnny Unitas was still slinging it as an old man.

Accorsi was also the guy who refused to select anybody except John Elway in the 1982 draft despite Elway’s constant threats of not wanting to play in Baltimore.

So to recap, Accorsi drafted Super Bowl wining quarterbacks Elway and Manning, and has also bumped elbows with Unitas. To say he knows a thing or two about the quarterback position at this level is a wild understatement.

What he’ll advise the Bears brass to do with the enigma that is Jay Cutler is up for debate. However, Chicago has now taken the right, first step in restoring that proud feeling this organization once had and fans deserve.
