Fantasy Basketball Redraft Who Would You Draft #1

facebooktwitterreddit

So with 9 weeks of the fantasy basketball season soon to be in the books, I thought it was a good time to do a quick fantasy basketball redraft. I will recap the season and see just how we all did drafting our teams. With what we know of the season up to this point, I will take a look at where guys rank as far as points scored in my points league that I enjoy the most. This is a high scoring league with no negative point categories, so it does not punish for players’ bad areas like turnovers or missed shots. If you want to take that into account we will try to mention the players that sometimes would be lower because of these issues, but for the most part the top 25 is the top 25 regardless.

Here are the scoring settings:

Points (PTS)1Blocks (BLK)3
Steals (STL)3Assists (AST)2
Rebounds (REB)2Field Goals Made (FGM)1
Free Throws Made (FTM)1Three Pointers Made (3PM)1
Double Doubles (DD)2Triple Doubles (TD)5
Quadruple Doubles (QD)25

So as you can see, this league is a ton of fun and I really enjoy the point settings. Just to get us started here I will now list the top 25 according to actual fantasy points per game average.

  1. James Harden-(82.8)
  2. Russell Westbrook-(80)
  3. DeMarcus Cousins-(79)
  4. Anthony Davis-(78.1)
  5. LeBron James-(74.8)
  6. Stephen Curry-(71)
  7. John Wall-(69)
  8. LaMarcus Aldridge-(68.9)
  9. Dwight Howard-(67.4)
  10. Blake Griffin-(66.6)
  11. Chris Paul-(66.4)
  12. Kobe Bryant-(65.9)
  13. Pau Gasol-(65.7)
  14. Tim Duncan-(65)
  15. Marc Gasol-(64.9)
  16. Damian Lillard-(64.5)
  17. Kyle Lowry-(63.6)
  18. Carmelo Anthony-(62.4)
  19. Chris Bosh-(62.3)
  20. Nikola Vucevic-(62.2)
  21. Jimmy Butler-(61.9)
  22. Rudy Gay-(61.4)
  23. Michael Carter-Williams-(60.7)
  24. Dwayne Wade-(60.3)
  25. Kevin Durant-(59.2)

Not a great deal of surprises in there other than Kevin Durant being 25th due to missing some games and a few low scores due to leaving early and so forth. Some surprises are Jimmy Butler at 21 and Anthony Davis at the 4 spot. Now let us take a look at the average draft positions:

1. LeBron James 2. Anthony Davis 3. Stephen Curry 4. Chris Paul 5. James Harden 6. Russell Westbrook 7. Carmelo Anthony 8. John Wall 9. Kevin Love 10. DeMarcus Cousins 11. Blake Griffin 12. Serge Ibaka 13. LaMarcus Aldridge 14. Damian Lillard 15. Kevin Durant 16. Kawhi Leonard 17. Al Jefferson 18. Kyrie Irving 19. Chris Bosh 20. Derrick Rose 21. Andre Drummond 22. Dirk Nowitzki 23. Ty Lawson 24. Goran Dragic 25. Dwight Howard

I don’t know why, but for so many people in fantasy sports, they have a hard time cutting bait with guys they drafted early who are going to come up short of expectations, or fail you when you need them most. Also, the opposite way, it is hard to believe some guys will fail to value a Jimmy Butler as high as he should be. Sometimes we need to stop and re-calibrate our efforts in whatever it is we find ourselves doing and take an inventory of what we have. That is what this list is intended to do. Where would we draft these guys considering what we know and what we expect of them going forward? This does not mean we would bump Kevin Durant down to 25th because that is where he is now, it just means we are going to take everything we know now into consideration as we rank this top 25 going forward of how we would draft a brand new team today.

Power Forward. Miami Heat. Chris Bosh. 25. player. 110. Chris Bosh has really had a nice uptick in value this year, however he has now followed it up with an elongated absence of eight games. Bosh will be excellent when he plays, but as aging stars often do on mediocre teams, he is likely to continue to miss time and thus keep him at a modest 25 ranking for me going forward. I almost feel as if this may even be too kind of a ranking as there might be a few players outside of my current top 25 I would trade him straight up for.

24. player. 67. Rudy Gay is really just having a great season this year. Fortunately, this is not a column to discuss his effect on the teams that he plays for, but rather for your fantasy team. Rudy is a great player to own in this format as he does a little bit of everything. I traded for him in a 20 team league and have not regretted for it at all.. Small Forward. Sacramento Kings. Rudy Gay

Jimmy Butler. 23. player. 24. Jimmy Butler has literally been burning up the court all year. As a Bulls fan, I am literally elated at how he has taken off this year. Many people have worried that as Derrick Rose gets healthy and assumes more of the offensive responsibilities that his numbers would fall off. So far that seems to be the complete opposite of what is happening. It would seem that Derrick getting healthy has freed Jimmy up to score even more. As mentioned above, Jimmy is a 62.4 average player but his last 15 days numbers were an astounding 72.4. I know that 15 days is a small sample size, but i believe Jimmy can keep it going. Maybe not quite at a 72 average clip, but that he could continue to bring the 62.4 number up.. Shooting Guard. Chicago Bulls

22. player. 38. Nikola Vucevic continues right where he left off last season. Right now he has averages of 18.1 points, 11.6 rebounds and tops that off with .9 blocks, .7 steals and 2.3 assists per game. Vuce is a very under-rated player that I question if I have him too low. He is cemented in that role, and the only thing that ever slows him down is the occasional injury bug. There is some growing skepticism about his toughness, but if he can stay on the court, does it really matter where your fantasy points come from?. Power Forward. Orlando Magic. Nikola Vucevic

Toronto Raptors. Kyle Lowry. 21. player. 81. Kyle Lowry has been an absolute stud for the Toronto Raptors. With the injury to DeMar DeRozan, he figures to continue to carry one of the league’s highest usage rates and the fantasy future of owning Lowry is bright.. Point Guard

San Antonio Spurs. Tim Duncan. 20. player. 29. Tim Duncan is one of the best players to ever play this game that we all love so much. He is easily one of the most under-rated players as far as real basketball is concerned, and I have never really understood why. All the guy does is go out and win titles. For your fantasy team though, unfortunately he plays for one of the best coaches with an incredible basketball mind. You may ask why do I say unfortunately. Well the reason is because on a regular occasion Coach Popovich chooses to rest his star power forward. Sometimes in the basketball world we know when this will happen, and if you have a daily lineup league this isnt too hard to overcome. However in a weekly league sometimes this can cause you to lose a match altogether. Then of course sometimes there is just a random ‘pop’ as we like to call it where Coach ‘Pop’ just pops him out of the lineup with no warning whatsoever. All this makes Timmy D. just a little but hard to own and trust in H2H leagues, especially during playoff times.. Power Forward

New York Knicks. Carmelo Anthony. 19. player. 27. Carmelo Anthony is a prime suspect to shut it down for the season at any point now. If you own him I will say this: I would start shopping him while he is still playing. Do it now before he misses again and starts the speculation of a lost season back up. Melo is a great player, but with the Knicks as bad as they are right now and a knee problem that will not heal itself, I would be looking to trade him ASAP.. Small Forward

Shooting Guard. Los Angeles Lakers. Kobe Bryant. 18. player. 20. I recently featured Kobe as a sell high in one of my previous posts, and I still stand by that. I fully expect that the Lakers brass, just as the Knicks brass with the aforementioned Carmelo Anthony, will be faced with the decision of what to do with the star players and primary investment for their franchises. If you have not figured this out yet, you can bet on Melo finding his way to a sell high column just like Kobe. The catch of course is what if these superstars continue to play and produce? Well just like anything in life, there is inherent risk in everything.

Cleveland Cavaliers. Kevin Love. 17. player. 156. Kevin Love has taken a bit of a dip, but appears to be gaining a slight head of steam as the new big three learn how to play together. Also, with the season ending injury to Anderson Varejao, it could also increase Love’s numbers a bit. Love could be a decent buy-low option going forward as I only expect him to climb this list.. Power Forward

player. 93. Michael Carter-Williams is almost like a one-man wrecking show for the hapless 76ers. No one really knows what is happening in Philadelphia, including the team management. One thing it has done is create a nice situation for MCW. He has really taken off since returning from injury, and the sky is the limit for the young star. He is another player I only see getting better and better.. Point Guard. Philadelphia 76ers. Michael Carter-Williams. 16

Next: Who Is In Our Top 15?

Dec 19, 2014; Memphis, TN, USA; Memphis Grizzlies center Marc Gasol (33) guards Chicago Bulls forward Pau Gasol (16) at FedExForum. Mandatory Credit: Justin Ford-USA TODAY Sports

15. player. 211. Marc Gasol is one of my favorite players in fantasy basketball to own. He is a top player among all forms of leagues because he does a little bit of everything and does it all very well. Marc is averaging a career best 20.2 points per game this year, and his needle is pointing straight up. As of the writing of this article some news on Zach Randolph hit declaring him to be ‘out’ without a timetable for a return.. Center. Memphis Grizzlies. Marc Gasol

Headlining the 14 and 15 spot are the Gasol brothers. These two guys are as good as they come, and certain dynamos for your fantasy team. Pau has really turned the Bulls into what could be a serious contender if Derrick Rose can stay healthy and on the court. Pau has the ability to do the same thing for your fantasy team, that is make them a serious title contender.. Power Forward. Chicago Bulls. Pau Gasol. 14. player. 24

Point Guard. Washington Wizards. John Wall. 11. player. 142. John Wall is as much fun to own in fantasy basketball as he is to watch on TV and on highlight films. Wall just has big play written all over his game, and beyond that has almost single-handedly transformed the Wizards into a competitive team. Wall is averaging a double-double with 17.8 points and 10.3 assists a game, while only turning the ball over 3.8 times a game.
