In the game of hockey, “goal of the year” is a phrase thrown around too often. As fans we get caught up in the heat of the moment, allowing ourselves to believe what we just witnessed was the best this year, or this decade, or even all-time.
Toronto Maple Leafs forward Mike Santorelli placed himself into that category tonight as his team is currently battling the Lightning in Tampa Bay.
Center Nazem Kadri found himself with the puck just inside the blue line. What he did next was execute one of the better passes you’ll ever witness. He sent a perfectly placed saucer pass over two defender sticks which landed right in the wheel house of Santorelli for the high finish.
Tampa Bay goalie Ben Bishop couldn’t believe it. At one moment he felt safe in the crease as the action was nearly 60 feet away, the next he knew Santorelli roofed one short-side on him.
It marked the first goal of the game, only 4:28 into action. The Leafs have added another one in the form of Joffrey Lupul’s ninth of the season to take a 2-0 lead after one period.
