The Dallas Cowboys enjoyed a tremendous 2014 season, finishing 12-4 and as NFC East champions. The Cowboys will head to the playoffs in large part thanks to the success of running back DeMarco Murray and wide receiver Dez Bryant, but neither was the most popular player on the team when it comes to jersey sales.
According to the Jersey Report, which tracks the sales of NFL jerseys at DICK’s Sporting Goods stores around the nation and online, tight end Jason Witten sold more jerseys than any other Cowboys player over the course of the 2014 season.
And while the Cowboys are supposedly “America’s team,” their jersey sales didn’t really reflect it. Witten’s jersey was the 31st highest selling jersey over the course of the NFL season. Buffalo Bills rookie Sammy Watkins sold more jerseys than Witten, even the Seattle Seahawks’ 12th Fan jersey outsold Witten, as well as struggling Washington Redskins quarterback Robert Griffin III.
The next highest selling Dallas Cowboys player was quarterback Tony Romo, Witten’s good buddy, who came in at No. 40 on the list. Murray was right behind him at No. 45 on the list, not bad but not stellar considering he set the Cowboys’ single season rushing record this year and at one point looked on pace to cruise past the 2,000 yard mark.
As for Bryant, who also set a record for most touchdowns scored in a season by a Cowboys player, he came in in 65th, 20 spots behind Murray.
Witten caught 64 passes for 703 yards, making it all the more impressive that Witten beat out three players who had MVP caliber and record setting seasons.
If the Cowboys can make a deep post season run, fans will surely jump back on that bandwagon and all these players can expect a bump during the 2015 season.
