In games this season against Missouri and Auburn, the cameras caught Lane Kiffin celebrating touchdowns before QB Blake Sims ever threw the ball, leading to lots of critique for the often critiqued coach from Alabama. Many fans in the SEC have a serious disdain for the coach who after only one season left the University of Tennessee for his ‘dream job’ as the head coach of the USC Trojans.
The first time it happened was in the Iron Bowl against Auburn as Sims and Cooper hook up on the 75-yard bomb. Once Kiffin sees that Amari Cooper is in single coverage with Auburn safety almost as the ball is snapped, you see Kiffin raise his hands to signal touchdown.
It happened again in the SEC championship game against Missouri on a 58-yard touchdown pass to DeAndrew White. During the Sugar Bowl press conference we finally hear from Lane Kiffin as he says:
"“I do that 30 times a game. They only show it when it works,” he said. “A lot of times I just, I’m not, I don’t even know I’m doing it really. It’s just in my head that they’re in this coverage and so there’s an excitement because you’re calling plays to get a defense.“If we get this defense, we’re going to score. As long as we execute it and make the throw. And so there’s times that you can tell what they’re in so that you know, okay, this is going to work.”“We called it again, got the coverage and you could see they (were) in it,” he said. “If we execute, like the players did, it’s going to be a touchdown.“I don’t even know when I started doing that.”"
Well there you have it college football fans, he does not even know he is doing it; so for those of you who hate him for it I guess you can get over it, and for those of you who love him for it, then you can keep right on loving him.
No matter what you do and no matter who you cheer for if you see Amari Cooper in the same coverage he had against Auburn on that play you can probably go ahead and signal touchdown as well.
