After a disappointing season, the New York Jets have fired head coach Rex Ryan and will now move on with their future under new leadership.

Black Monday has begun, with the New York Jets informing head coach Rex Ryan that he will not return in 2015.

When Rex Ryan was hired as the New York Jets head coach back in 2008, the team suddenly got really good. The defensive minded coach had a quarterback in Mark Sanchez who led the team to two straight AFC Championship appearances but the winning stopped almost as suddenly as it arrived.

After this bright first few seasons in New York, Rex Ryan’s tenure became defined by bone headed mistakes, a string of losing seasons and things like the butt fumble.

Ryan had more than enough chances to turn things around and his firing is one of almost mutual parting in New York.

While he wasn’t going to quit the job, Ryan will probably be the first person to tell you he didn’t do his job the way he should have and his firing was something that almost needed to happen.

In fact, this is so not out of the blue that Rex Ryan cleaned out his desk during the week, fully anticipating being fired.

From here, the Jets will look to candidates like Seahawks defensive coordinator Dan Quinn and Cardinals coordinator Todd Bowles, but they are no doubt moving on from Rex Ryan. As for the former Jets coach, there are rumors that he could get into television as an analyst for FOX, CBS or ESPN but the Atlanta Falcons seem like a team that could give him a job right away again in 2015.
