Although he and the Houston Texans may be watching the NFL Playoffs at home this year, J.J. Watt has made his case for the NFL MVP award.

Not since 1986 when Lawrence Taylor terrorized the National Football League has a defensive player won the NFL Most Valuable Player award; the last 26 winners have either been a quarterback or running back. The trend is not surprising.

More from Houston Texans

Quarterbacks and running backs are the primary ball handlers of an NFL team. As such, they are allotted a skewed number of opportunities to accrue statistics and have more potential to achieve tangibly impressive seasons. However, The 2014 NFL MVP should be going to a monster that has made a living harassing and abusing said quarterbacks and running backs all season long.

After a season that can only be described as dominating, Houston Texans defensive end J.J. Watt is in position to be the NFL’s first defensive player to win the league MVP in the last 27 years. He has had an undeniable impact that helped a Texans team get to within one game of the playoffs.

Although he primarily impacts the game defending the pass and the run, he also displayed an offensive component of his skill set that should aid voters in recognizing his versatility and help him earn MVP honors.
