Texas A&M coach Kevin Sumlin may or may not have a new defensive coordinator, but he will be in the market for a new pool boy after firing the most recent one for snooping.

Some people never learn.

Twitter is social media’s hairpin trigger: once those 140 characters (or less) hit, there is no pulling it back, a lesson that Texas A&M coach Kevin Sumlin’s now-ex pool boy learned the hard way.

Seems that Rusty McFarland let his burning ears and anxious fingers mix a cocktail that led him to let the world know that his boss was on the phone, perhaps with LSU defensive coordinator John Chavis, who has been widely rumored to be filling the same role with Texas A&M. Ever the enthused, McFarland let his inner Jay Glazer get the best of him with this a tweet that Sumlin then (truly) fired back with:

D’oh! That must have confirmed to McFarland that he wasn’t a member of Sumlin’s inner circle. True to form, Texas’ most popular ex-pool boy tried to spin what couldn’t:

While it may have been a joke, the fact that the Aggies’ defense ranked 103rd in the nation this season wasn’t.Where is the laughter in allowing 35 or more points five times, including a 59-0 curb stomping at Alabama?

McFarland should consider this a life lesson, one that hopefully will reward him with less snooping and more respect for the people he’ll eventually work for. One thing’s for sure: he won’t have Sumlin as a reference.
