5 New Year’s Resolutions For Fantasy Sports Managers
By Dave Fuqua
I woke up today and I thought to myself, “What are the 5 New Year’s resolutions for fantasy sports that I need to make today?” For many of us fantasy nerds, we tend to get stuck in our ways and sometimes they will either make us or break us in our hopes and dreams for a fantasy title. Many of us, I have found, also fall into the same category of weirdness and get in bad habits that can hamper our hopes of winning that fantasy title we all long for.

#5) Stop Over Valuing Players I Drafted.
Every year I draft a player that is riding the hype train. Then every year I get an offer for said player that I decline, and then it always comes back to haunt me. I usually have the crazy thought that this guy is only going to get better, but it almost always comes back to haunt me. This year the missed trade that still haunts me was not sending Gordon Hayward for Damian Lillard.
Learn from me, friends. You will get nowhere in fantasy sports by placing too high of a value on your players, so always try to be realistic in your evaluations. Try to honestly view the trade from all standpoints, and accept the fact that Gordon Hayward is not going to be the next Michael Jordan. This is one all fantasy sports players could stand to learn from, as it is the most common problem I see among all my leagues.

4) Stop Sending Out Crappy Trade Offers
Listen guys, no one wants to get offered Geno Smith for Calvin Johnson, so quit sending out those kind of offers. Oh, I know 99.9% of you guys would never ever send out an offer like that, yet in every league and every year I manage to get at least one of these kind of offers a week. There is nothing that will get you put on your league’s blacklist faster than sending some garbage trade offer just because you read that Geno is going to take a leap this year and be a real quarterback.
In case you have lived under a rock, every single player is prepared to take the next step in preseason. All QBs are going to be the next Joe Montana, all RBs the next Emmit Smith and all WRs the next Jerry Rice. Sometimes it pans out and sometimes it doesn’t, but unless you want to wind up as the laughing stock of your league, don’t send out a trade unless you would at least consider accepting it on the other side.

3) Stop Partying Like It’s 1999
Ok guys, 1999 is gone and it is never coming back. Yet every year in different leagues I see guys who just like to draft their teams based on what happened in the past. Sports is a fast moving entity, and despite what Ferris Bueller says, you don’t have time to stop and smell the roses. You need to get on the train and move with it. Do your homework and quit drafting guys because they had a decent year last year.
This is a phenomenon that usually occurs the most in fantasy basketball leagues, but you see it across all sports of lazy owners who simply show up and say, “Oh hey, Kevin Garnett! He’s a beast! Let me take him in the third round!” I guess that is okay as it is nice to have people like that who leave the studs for the rest of us to draft, but if you are reading this article, you are better than that. So do your homework and leave last year’s stud who will be this year’s dud for Joe Blow to draft.

2) Stop Giving Up On Guys So Fast
This one may be just for me personally, but every year there is always one guy that I cut before I should and I wind up regretting it like crazy. I must learn to live with the chagrin of keeping players a little longer than I would like than to simply cut them for the next waiver flavor of the week.
Remember a guy named Jeremy Lin who swept the basketball world with a well known phrase known as Linsanity? Well before that became so popular, I had picked up Jeremy in a super competitive 20 team fantasy basketball league I play in. He had had a few decent games and then he had a couple of DNP-coaches decisions, so in my quest to find another flavor of the week I cut him for some bum. Then, less than a week later, the world is set on fire with Linsanity and someone else beat me to the punch to pick him back up.
A few years before that, I had picked up Peyton Hillis when he was a mid-season break out player for the Denver Broncos. I let him go too soon, and the person who picked him up went on to win the league that year. Had I been patient, it probably would have been me that won the league that year.

1) Remember It Is Just A Game
At the end of the day, a lot of us have fun with this game and a lot of us may make some money and love the game of fantasy sports whether your flavor is football, basketball, baseball or hockey. But remember, it is just a game, so always try to keep your priorities in check and keep first things first. If you have a family, don’t neglect your family on game day. If you have a job, don’t neglect your work to keep up with the latest news and so forth. For the greater majority of us, this is just a hobby. But some people, they go too far and get entirely too serious about all of this.
So may your 2015 be your best year ever, and may you find more fantasy sports titles this year than ever before. We hope this year is a blessed year for you and favor would find you at every turn in life. We hope that you will continue to check with Fantasy CPR for all your fantasy sports needs. As always, feel free to sound off in the comments about your New Year’s resolutions for fantasy sports, and hit us op on Twitter with any questions you might have. Good luck and happy new year to you all, and may 2015 be your best year ever!
