Georgia Tech is a throwback in these high-flying days of college football, throwing the ball fewer than 15 times a game. But as Mississippi State learned, it’s not because they can’t.

It’s not true to say Georgia Tech throws the ball about twice a decade. It just feels that way.

The Yellow Jackets are, however, very run-oriented in their triple-option attack, with three runners averaging at least 10 carries a game and averaging less than 15 passes per game.

Georgia Tech runs the ball 79.2 percent of the time this season, but quarterback Justin Thomas can air it out, like he did in the first quarter of the Orange Bowl Wednesday night when he hit gigantic wide receiver Darren Waller (6-foot-5, 232 pounds) for a 41-yard touchdown.

Waller got behind 5-foot-10 defensive back Jamerson Love of Mississippi State, who was called for pass interference on the play.

Through five quarters of play in New Year’s Six bowl games on Wednesday, it has been a less-than-stellar day for the state of Mississippi.

Ole Miss was bushwhacked 42-3 by TCU in the Peach Bowl and Waller’s touchdown helped Georgia Tech to a 14-0 lead over Misssissippi State.

This will be the part where SEC “fans” (and, yes, I still have trouble with the concept of someone being a fan of an entire conference … it’s like chanting “At-lan-tic” at an NBA game) will remind us that the Mississippi schools aren’t really part of the SEC hierarchy.

Of course, based on their play Wednesday, that’s a fairly accurate statement.
