Washington Redskins head coach Jay Gruden said he needs to have a more cohesive unit both on and off the field next year, citing media leaks as a major problem.

Jay Gruden didn’t anticipate that coaching the Washington Redskins would come with the media circus that surrounds him and his team every day, but now he knows. As he looks to improve next year, Gruden noted that very media circus will need to be addressed to promote better cohesion in 2015. Specifically, he needs to root out those who gabbed to the media about every problem inside and outside the Washington locker room.

“Sometimes the best addition to your football team is subtraction,” Gruden said per CSN Washington. “That’s what we’ve got to figure out. Being with these guys for a long time, there are some things that you want to address. You want to make sure you have the right people in here. I’m not saying that all 53 guys are my type of guys, you know?”

Oh, we know, Jay. We hardly needed any leaks within the team to know how Gruden felt about quarterback Robert Griffin III among others on the team. The man oozed resentment from the moment he walked in and dealt with RGIII, for which he can hardly be blamed given the catastrophe that was RGIII in 2014.

Still, this is Gruden’s team and the media leaks undermine the team’s unity and Gruden’s message, a point receiver Santana Moss stressed in a recent interview.

“That’s got to stop, man,” Moss said on The Fan, per CSN. “You got these cats dry snitching and telling media in-house business.”

Dry snitching leads to dry stitching, or so they say, which can’t be a good thing for Gruden or Washington. The team was a hot mess, finishing at 4-12 on the season thanks to a slew of bad quarterback play that served merely as the tip of the iceberg.

Even if Washington had gotten some good offense, it may not have been enough. They allowed the third-most points against in the NFL on a defense that ranked around 20th in yards allowed per game.

There was very little to build upon for Washington in 2014, so it’s going to require a more concerted effort from the entire team and coaching staff. That starts with airing out in-house business, which undermines unity and focus. If Jay Gruden even gets another chance to coach the team this year, expect a tighter ship in the Washington locker room in 2015.
