Cowboys Hall of Fame receiver Michael Irvin feels his former team is the only one in the playoffs capable of breaking up the Seahawks-Patriots Super Bowl many predict will happen.

More from Dallas Cowboys

Wait…you say Michael Irvin said something eye-opening? Stop the press!

The Cowboys Hall of Famer and current NFL Network analyst feels that his former team is capable of busting up the SeahawksPatriots Super Bowl that many pundits have already locked in. Irvin dropped this enlightening statement during a recent radio interview on San Antonio ESPN station KZDC-AM.

“….But the reality of it is, at the beginning of the season I said it’d be Seattle and New England,” said Irvin. “I still believe those are the front runners for the Super Bowl. The only other team left in this field that I believe can crash that party is the Dallas Cowboys because they’re the only team that can go into Seattle and beat Seattle again. The Dallas Cowboys have that chance.”

Thanks, Playmaker. That’s going to make for a good post in the locker room of the defending champs, yet Irvin does have a point.

Last October 12 may seem like ancient history, yet the Cowboys did drop the Seahawks in a 30-23 victory that saw DeMarco Murray rush for 115 yards, while Tony Romo threw a pair of scores. The loss put Seattle at 3-2 at the time, but they have gone 9-2 since en route to winning the NFC West title and clinching homefield throughout the postseason.

Irvin feels part of the reason the Cowboys are still under the radar is their defense, which entered the season as a massive question mark, yet ended it ranked 21st overall.

“It’s like our first year that we won the Super Bowl (after the 1992 season) where everybody didn’t think it was our year,” he said. “Dallas has that opportunity because they’re so physical with the run game and physical pass game. You can make that run and surprise everybody. Now will they do it is another story.

“I’ll tell you the key cog though. It’s Anthony Spencer. If he can turn up some heat and get to the quarterback a little bit more, man they’ve got a real good chance at getting to that Super Bowl.”

Well, before we start talking Cowboys-Seahawks II, there’s that pesky issue of Dallas winning Sunday’s NFC Wild Card over Detroit and a trip to Green Bay the following week. So let’s keep that chatter to a whisper until January 18. If the sun rises and those two teams are playing for a shot at the Super Bowl, perhaps then we can start talking rematch.
