St. Louis Rams head coach Jeff Fisher declared the team will add a quarterback in free agency or through the NFL Draft and Sam Bradford will have to win his job back before the 2015 NFL season, but he’s embracing the competition.

Fans of the St. Louis Rams may say their team is only a quarterback away from contending for a playoff spot. But ask Sam Bradford, and he’ll tell you he’s still the franchise’s premier signal-caller. On Tuesday, Coach Jeff Fisher told reporters the team would look to add a quarterback through the draft or free agency, and that Bradford would have to re-work his contract and compete for the job.

“I would accept it,” Bradford said per the Associated Press. “I feel like every time I step on the field, it’s a competition. If they feel like that’s in the best interest of the team, then I would support it and I would embrace the competition.”

Since he was drafted in 2010, Bradford has gone 18-30 as a starter, struggling to stay healthy. In Week 3 of the 2014 preseason, Bradford suffered an ACL injury against the Cleveland Browns and was lost for the season. In his place, Shaun Hill and Austin Davis struggled mightily, leading the Rams to a 6-10 record and missing the playoffs for a 10th straight year.

For Bradford, this may be his last chance with the Rams. The 2008 Heisman Trophy winner entered the league as the next “franchise” quarterback, but has spent too much time on the sidelines holding a clipboard. When he’s been healthy, Bradford has flashed the skill set that made him so revered at Oklahoma, going 5-2-1 in his career against the NFC West.

“That’s indicative of the type of talent he has,” Fisher said. “Most of those wins came when this team wasn’t, in our opinion, as good as it is now.”

Fisher’s right — this team is good enough to win now. Buoyed by one of the NFL’s best defensive lines and a crop of talented offensive weapons, there’s no reason the Rams can’t contend for a playoff spot next season. This year, they’ve dominated the likes of the Broncos and Seahawks. Next year, who will be under center? Sam Bradford would tell you he’s at the head of that competition.
