Marc Trestman’s former quarterback Josh McCown would like to see Trestman in Tampa Bay

Former Chicago Bears head coach Marc Trestman could be one of the hot commodities in the offensive coordinator market this year.

After letting go of former offensive coordinator Jeff Tedford, the Buccaneers are in a need of new mind to call the offense. Trestman could be that fresh mind to lead Tampa Bay’s offense from abysmal to respectable again.

In fact, his former quarterback and current Tampa Bay Buccaneers quarterback Josh McCown thinks Trestman would be a good fit with the Buccaneers. McCown stepped in for the injured Jay Cutler in Chicago during the 2013 season in which McCown had a great deal of success under Trestman.

In 2013, McCown threw for 1,829 yards with 13 touchdowns and only one interception as quarterback for the Bears. He also posted the highest completion percentage and quarterback rating of his career while under Trestman.

McCown struggled with turnovers this year, and Trestman would be a much welcomed addition to the Tampa Bay staff.

“I think Marc is an outstanding coach and an outstanding person and he has a great sense of offensive football, especially quarterback play,” McCown said in an interview, “I just know that, for me personally, I played my best football in my career under him. So obviously I have good things to say. But I’ve been around a bunch of different guys over the course of my career, and he was probably the most detailed with game plans and things like that. I really felt like he was on top of it.’’

Having the last two Bears coaches on the Buccaneers staff could have its advantages, with head coach Lovie Smith’s specialty being on the defensive side of the ball and Trestman offensive. While Trestman will have many suitors around the league, Tampa Bay has the number one pick in the draft, which could be used on a future franchise quarterback.

Trestman calling plays in Tampa Bay might be the perfect match.

Along with Trestman, Tampa Bay has also expressed interest in Greg Roman, Marty Mornhinweg, and Dirk Koetter for their vacancy at coordinator. The Buccaneers are coming off a 2-14 season in which they lost every single home game they played.

Tampa Bay ranked 25th in passing yards per game and 29th in rushing yards per game. Regardless of who they hire, the offense has to improve in 2015.
