Jamie Carragher: Liverpool should’ve tried harder to get Steven Gerrard to stay

Former Liverpool defender Steven Gerrard thinks the club should’ve tried harder to keep Steven Gerrard at Anfield.

Liverpool captain Steven Gerrard announced that it will be his last season with the club, and his future will take him away from Anfield. It is the end of an era, as Liverpool boss Brendan Rodgers said.

Former Liverpool defender and Gerrard teammate Jamie Carragher, who now works as a pundit in England, thinks it didn’t have to come to an end this season. Carragher thinks the club should’ve done more to keep Gerrard at the club.

“I think that along with every Liverpool supporter I am sad that eventually it has come to this,” said Carragher, via Sky Sports.

“But it happens to all the great players of the past and there will be great players in the future. It has to come to an end someday.

“But from the club’s point of view, I am surprised. It was Stevie’s decision, but could the club have maybe done a little bit more? Maybe spoken about a coaching role in the future to try to entice him to stay?”

“No one should have a job at a club for life just because of what they have done as a player. But to lose that experience at the club which could be passed on to the youngsters and academy players, from the club’s and supporters’ point of view I would have liked to have seen him stay in some capacity.”

It doesn’t look like Gerrard is ready to transition into coaching though, it looks like he is still keen to continue playing just not in the Premier League any longer. Gerrard said he doesn’t want to play for a team that would see him suiting up against Liverpool, and he has been heavily linked to Major League Soccer and a move to the United States.

Gerrard could always transition back to Liverpool when he is ready to get into coaching down the line, that door hasn’t been closed for him.
