Odell Beckham Jr. has been a highlight reel mainstay in his rookie NFL season, and especially after “The Catch” in Week 12 against the Cowboys. However, in the latter part of the season, he turned into somewhat of a fine magnet as well.
Week 16 featured a big brawl between the Giants and Rams, touched off by Beckham’s kick at Rams linebacker Alec Ogletree after the latter’s late hit. The incident resulted in a big melee between the two teams, and Beckham was fined the following week to the tune of $10,000.
In Week 17, he was at it again; this time removing his helmet on the field to protest a call. He wasn’t flagged for the action, amazingly, since it’s a longtime rule in the league. The league remedied their on-field oversight by delivering Beckham yet another fine this week. This time the fine is $11,025 for the incident, according to a report by Pro Football Talk. Beckham’s helmet-removing reaction was due to an uncalled interference by Eagles defenders. No flag was thrown on the play.
There seems to be two sides to Beckham’s open displays of passion as the season wore on. Giants head coach Tom Coughlin seemed largely annoyed with his scoring celebrations, at one point telling him to tone it down. That same passion obviously led him to get angry at perceived fouls, such as Ogletree’s late hit or the no-call on interference. Former Giants running back Brandon Jacobs actually thinks it’s pretty great.
“You can’t stop that,” former Giants running back Brandon Jacobs told the NY Daily News. “He’s genuine. He’s not putting that on. You don’t control that, because that’s special. What he does is from the heart, and it makes him electrifying.”
Jacobs says that the rookie receiver is just being himself and that the Giants shouldn’t go out of their way to put a stopper on it. Nevertheless, Beckham’s lucky the season’s over so he can’t rack up any more fines in his rookie year.
Odell Beckham Jr. finished the year with 91 receptions for 1,305 yards and 12 touchdowns. He became quarterback Eli Manning’s prime target and was lauded by arguably the best rival he faced in Seahawks cornerback Richard Sherman. He admits he plays with his passion on his sleeve, and well, if that means more spectacular catches, maybe the Giants will want to let him be after all.
