The Dallas Mavericks traded for Rajon Rondo this winter, but they’ll have competition in re-signing him from the Knicks and Lakers this summer.

When the Dallas Mavericks traded for Rajon Rondo this winter, they didn’t know for sure if he’d be back with the team in the 2015-16 season. The Boston Celtics were certain Rondo would walk, which prompted the trade to the Mavericks, but his future is far from set in stone when it comes to free agency and where he’ll play net season.

Rajon Rondo wants to be on a winning team and he’ll have the opportunity to hand pick where he plays the next few years of his career. That could end up being in Dallas, as he gave the Mavericks the chance to get first crack at him in free agency and get a fair shake on where they’ll stand in the running to bring him back.

According to Sean Deveney from Sporting News, the Mavericks will have competition from the Los Angeles Lakers and New York Knicks when it comes to acquiring the services of Rajon Rondo beyond the 2014-15 season.

"There will be other teams involved in the pursuit of Rondo. The Lakers have long expressed interest and still are expected to be among the first in line in the bidding for Rondo. The Knicks—yes, even with the triangle offense—are already certain to be in the mix, too, a source with knowledge of the situation told SN."

Heat coming from the Knicks and Lakers is nothing new, as both teams have been looking for superstar point guard talent and both teams have had eyes on Rondo. Going to Los Angeles is a bit of a stretch, as not only would it alienate fans back in Boston, but it would see Rondo head to a team that is as far from playoff ready as a Lakers team possibly can be.

Then again, the Knicks are even worse, and there is even talk of trading Carmelo Anthony to get assets for the future and allow for players like Rondo to be brought in.

Either way, the Mavericks, Knicks and Lakers all have more than half a season left to play — and postseason games, for Dallas — yet already they’re starting to look at free agency and how they may be able to get Rajon Rondo to sign with them.
