Tampa Bay has already been linked to a bunch of names for their vacancy. Quarterback Josh McCown has even been pining for his old Chicago Bears coach Marc Trestman to get the job in Tampa Bay.
One candidate Tampa Bay won’t be conducting an interview with though is Tennessee Titans‘ tight ends coach Mike Mularkey. The Titans have denied the Buccaneers’ request to interviewMularkey for the Buccaneers’ open position on their coaching staff.
Mularkey has been an offensive coordinator in the league before and was the head coach of the Jacksonville Jaguars in 2012. Mularkey has been around the game for a long time and would have been a good choice in Tampa Bay considering they have the number one pick in the draft and could take a quarterback at that spot.
However, the Titans have a high pick too and plenty of problems themselves and a veteran coach like Mularkey is needed on Ken Whisenhunt’s staff in Tennessee as they continue to rebuild the franchise. The Titans have the second pick in the draft and could very well take a quarterback at that spot too. Having Mularkey back will be big for the Titans going forward.
Mularkey helped develop quarterback Matt Ryan when he was in Atlanta as an offensive coordinator and could be critical to the success of Jake Locker, Zach Mettenberger, or a quarterback they might draft in April.
The Titans posted a 2-14 record this season and their quarterback play was abysmal to say the least. The quarterbacks for Tennessee failed to stay healthy and eventually career backup quarterback Charlie Whitehurst had to finish off the season for the Titans.
