Dude tore his Achilles in practice on Dec. 19, finished coaching that day’s practice while sitting in a chair and was on the bus later that night to go to Binghamton, where he coached the Bonnies to a win the following day.
He continues to coach, despite having to use a little tricycle-looking scooter thing to get around.
After the Bonnies knocked off UMass 69-55 on Saturday, Schmidt made his way to the opposing bench for the traditional postgame handshakes.
He got one in before the degree of difficulty got him.
The Bonnies improved to 8-4 with the win in their Atlantic-10 Conference opener, holding the Minutemen to 35 percent shooting on the afternoon and forcing 15 turnovers.
Schmidt is in his eighth season at St. Bonaventure, where he is 114-114 after Saturday’s victory. He led the Bonnies to the NCAA tournament in 2012, where they pushed No. 3-seed Florida State before losing 66-63 in the second round.
Prior to coming to St. Bonaventure, Schmidt coached for six seasons at Robert Morris, where his teams were 82-90.
The Bonnies have been to only six NCAA tournaments, reaching the Final Four in 1970 behind the standout play of future Hall of Famer Bob Lanier.
