NFC Wild Card: Carolina Panthers forget how to field a punt (Video)
By Josh Hill
The Carolina Panthers are trying to get out of the Wild Card round of the playoffs, but they won’t get far if they keep forgetting how to field a punt.
For two straight years, the Carolina Panthers have hosted a playoff game in the NFC and they’re trying to make sure this year doesn’t end like it did last year. In 2014, the Carolina Panthers hosted the San Francisco 49ers and got bounced after some mistakes need up coming back to bite them.

In 2015, the Panthers committed a boneheaded play early on in the game that might come back to bite them. Playing the quarterback-less Arizona Cardinals, all the Panthers need to do is stay out of their own way and not give up any easy scoring chances.
That’s the exact opposite of what happened on one particular play, as the Panthers forgot how to field a punt and turned the ball over deep inside of their own territory.
There’s a lot going on here that you need to understand. For starters, Cardinals punter Drew Butler is about as bad at punting the ball as Ryan Lindley is at throwing it, as none of his punts have gone well today. Naturally, the Panthers didn’t do what a normal team would do in a punting situation against a terrible punter, as they tried to field one of the worst punts every kicked by a human being.
What ended up happening wasn’t another special teams snafu for the Cardinals, rather a turnover by the Panthers that led to points for Arizona.
You had one job, Brenton Bersin, and that mistake might be one that comes back to bite a Panthers team not staying out of their own way.
Then again, they only managed to win 7 games this season, so are we all really that surprised.
