Steven Gerrard confirms move to Major League Soccer

Liverpool captain Steven Gerrard confirmed he will make the move to Major League Soccer after the season.

Liverpool captain Steven Gerrard confirmed reports that he was playing his last season at the English club on Friday. There were rumblings and rumors that Gerrard was headed to Major League Soccer, and Gerrard himself confirmed those reports in an interview with LFC TV.

One of the biggest gripes against Major League Soccer is the placement of player’s with particular franchises, and it looks like Gerrard is already headed to one of the most popular.

Sports Illustrated’s Grant Wahl said he hears Gerrard will land with the Los Angeles Galaxy, the reigning MLS Cup champions and the franchise that welcomed former Manchester United and Real Madrid superstar David Beckham. Gerrard and Beckham both served as captain of the England national team at one point in time as well.

According to Sky Sportsthe field for Gerrard’s services is a little bit broader, and includes New York City FC and the New York Red Bulls. New York City FC is affiliated with Manchester City in the Premier League, and signed Frank Lampard from Chelsea to only controversially loan him to Manchester City.

It would be a precarious position for Gerrard to join NYCFC. Gerrard came out and said that he would have no interest in joining a Premier League team and playing against Liverpool. Joining that particular club might put him in a situation where has little control over whether he gets loaned out to Manchester City as well.

It would provide an opportunity for Gerrard to win a Premier League title, a trophy that hasn’t found it’s way to his personal trophy room yet, but winning would be less significant to him if it came with a club other than Liverpool.

Toronto FC, where Michael Bradley and Tottenham Hotspur’s Jermaine Defoe went, is also a contender for Gerrard’s services.
