Patrick Kane and the Chicago Blackhawks are arguably the best team in the NHL and they’ll be rewarded for their play the first half of the year at the All-Star Game with four of his teammates voted in by the fans to partake in the event.
The 2015 NHL All-Star Fan Vote was presented by SiriusXM and ended 11:59 p.m. ET on Jan. 1, with the top six vote-getters by position named the first six all-stars.
Kane makes his fourth All-Star Game appearance after receiving the second most votes with 1,232,201 and leads the Hawks in goals with 18, assists with 23 and points with 41. He’s on pace for a career high in goals and could set a new career-high for points.
Joining Kane from the Hawks are captain Jonathan Toews who makes his third All-Star appearance, two-time Norris Trophy winner, Duncan Keith who also makes his third game, his defensive partner, Brent Seabrook who makes his first appearance and goalie Corey Crawford who also makes his first appearance.
Kane, Toews and Keith are all very deserving of their All-Star recognition while the selections of Seabrook and Crawford likely do not make the squad without the support of the passionate fans of the Blackhawks, despite their strong seasons to this point.
The leading vote-getter was Buffalo Sabres forward Zemgus Girgensons who hauled in 1,574,896 votes with fans in his native Latvia helping stuff the ballot box.
“It’s a little bit embarrassing and funny at the same time,” Girgensons recently told The Associated Press, via NHL.com. “It came out of nowhere. I know people know me back home, but I didn’t think it was going to go that far. That’s like crazy far.”
According to NHL.com the fan voting was a rousing success with much more fan votes coming in this year compared to the 2012 fan campaign.
"Fans cast more than 35 million votes this year, up 52 percent from the 2012 NHL All-Star fan campaign. Nearly 27 percent of those votes were cast by fans outside of North America, up 7,000 percent from 2012."
The rest of the roster will be announced on Saturday, Jan. 10 and determined by the NHL.
You don’t have to wait too much longer to see what I consider the best All-Star weekend with the Honda NHL All-Star Skills Competition taking place on Saturday, Jan. 24 and the Honda NHL All-Star Game on Sunday, Jan. 25.
