The St. Louis Rams are building a new stadium in Los Angeles, but it’s a building that might not be for the football team.

This weekend saw the focus of the football world zero in on playoff action, but that was all a smokescreen for St. Louis Rams owner Sam Koenke. While the world was watching football, Koenke was busy locking down a stadium lease deal in Inglewood what will likely se the Rams move to Los Angeles in the near future.

Before we get too ahead of ourselves though, it appears that the new stadium the Rams owner is building may not be for the team.

As pointed out by Jason La Canfora from CBSSports.com, the new stadium that is being built in Los Angeles may involve Rams ownership but may not involve the Rams themselves.

"The announcement doesn’t necessarily mean that the Rams will be moving to Los Angeles. The Rams are negotiating with the city of St. Louis over enhancements to the Edward Jones Dome, which the team has occupied since the middle of the 1995 season. The Rams have until Jan. 28 to inform the city if they will convert their lease to a year-to-year setup."

This is a critical stage that the Rams are about to enter with the city of St. Louis, as the prospect of leaving for Los Angeles is still a very real possibility. The team has an out if the tax payers in Missouri don’t want to build a new stadium as the Edward Jones Dome may not cut it moving forward.

Professional sports are as much about where you play as how you play, as evident by the new stadium the Atlanta Braves are building even though they have no business doing so. St. Louis is a sports town, but Los Angeles is one of the largest markets in the world and it has deep ties with the Rams franchise.

All of this seems to point toward the Rams moving to Los Angeles in 2016 or even waiting until the stadium is finished in 2018. Either way, there are a lot of fast moving parts to this situation and things could develop quickly that see the Rams pack up and move back to Los Angeles before the year is out.
