Fox’s New Girl changed their opening credits this season and has drawn criticism from fans
After three fantastic seasons and one of the best intro theme songs on TV, producers of Fox’s New Girl elected to pull the original New Girl theme and replace it with a new, boring opening credit sequence.
In an interview with HitFix, Zooey Deschanel, who plays the star of series, Jess, was asked how she felt about the new credits, and she kind of tip-toed around the answer before slipping that she liked the old ones better.
"HitFix: And, finally talk a bit about the new credits. What are your thoughts on seeing them?Zooey Deschanel: I had no choice. Yeah, it wasn’t my choice and I had no real influence in the matter.HitFix: But what was your reaction when you saw them for the first time?Zooey Deschanel: It’s different.HitFix: Do you view them as being sort of like long-term or would you ideally like to have season five a whole new thing?Zooey Deschanel: I don’t really have an opinion on it. I like the original ones personally but that’s just me."
I, too, like the original credits which feature Zooey singing a catchy jingle rather than sounds, better known as music.
Here’s the original credits:

Obviously, the original credits are much better, right?
We do, however, have to consider the pros and cons of each opening credit sequence.

The original credits, although more creative, do only include Jess, Nick, Schmidt, and Winston, and the show has evolved to include Coach and Cece as much as any of those four characters. The new credit sequence shows all five of the new characters, which Zooey mentioned as a reason for the change.
The original is definitely more creative, but it also had to be cut short many times because the old credit sequence is 20 seconds long. The new credit sequence is six seconds long, which gives writers and directors room for an extra joke or two. In fact, I have a theory that all the good episodes feature a shorter intro. I can’t prove it just yet, but I’m still working on it.
Personally, I love the old the credit sequence because it also fit the scope of the show.
If you remember, in the first episode and parts of the first season, Jess used to sing the jingle “Who’s that girl?” The old intro helped tie everything together.
Now, as Jess’ character has evolved, she doesn’t sing the jingle anymore, so it makes sense why they’d change the theme song.
Fans weren’t happy, though, and they shared their disappointment on twitter.
Unfortunately, for the New Girl fans who’ve been there since the beginning, I’m sure a reason why they liked the show was because of the catchy jingle that set the tone for each episode.
Hopefully, the old credits will be back soon!
