Fantasy Basketball: Is It Time To Stash Andrew Bogut?

Today we re going to examine the question: “Is it time to add Andrew Bogut to your fantasy basketball team?” There are players like Andrew Bogut who have the talent and upside necessary to be a huge asset to your team, but sometimes because of circumstances beyond their control they don’t receive the playing time to make a difference that we need. I think that Andrew Bogut could be a player of that variety. In order for a player to be an asset for us in fantasy basketball they absolutely, without question, must get minutes. And for most leagues, they need to be consistent.

Bogut has missed twelve games in a row now, but should be coming back pretty soon. The problem I have with Bogut is that the Warriors have not missed a beat without him. What that would seem to spell is very limited minutes for the big guy. With the way Marreese Speights has been playing, the Warriors can afford to let Bogut stay rested and healthy for a playoff run this year. That could even potentially lead to random nights off, which can be a true murderer for your fantasy basketball team.

Bogut can definitely produce and will be an effective option when on the floor, no question. The best place to own him will likely be in a deeper 12 team or larger league and have him as a cheap, inexpensive option towards the end of your bench. All in all, I would probably even consider picking Bogut up in a standard size league, but I would be looking to deal him as soon as he put together four or five good games.

Bogut was only averaging 26.3 minutes per game in November when he was healthy, and at the beginning of the season. As much as I like him and as good as he can be he certainly fits the bill of not being a great option for standard size leagues due to a lack of minutes played. I don’t think anyone sees his minutes going over 25 minutes at all during the regular season, so he will be a guy you want to stay way from if at all possible. The best action is to be smart and use a solid sell high strategy to get a guy you can count on down the stretch.

As if all that is not enough reason to shy away from Bogut, he will also be battling for minutes with David Lee in the front court, who was out all of November. When you add up all the facts, the future does not bode well for Bogut’s fantasy basketball prospects and the best advice is to stay away or trade him once he is healthy and playing well. Just temper your expectations, and remember that 2009 is gone and it is never coming back.
