The NCAA made a big announcement today to offer some help to athlete’s parents who have kids competing in the championship games.

The NCAA announced plans today to help offset the costs of travel for the parents or guardians of athletes competing in Men’s and Women’s Final Four and the College Football playoff. The NCAA release shared the details on their website.

"The NCAA will pay up to $3,000 total in travel, hotel and meal expenses for family members of each student-athlete who competes in the Final Four semifinal games but don’t advance to the championships. The NCAA will pay up to $4,000 in expenses for each of the student-athletes who compete in the men’s and women’s basketball championship games. The College Football Playoff may provide up to $3,000 in travel expenses for families of each competing student-athlete."

As a parent myself I give kudos toĀ the NCAA for their efforts here. There is nothing most parents would rather do than watch their kids compete and to do so at the highest stage for their level of competition is even greater. In a day and age where the talk of paying collegiate athletes has left a bitter taste in the mouths of many this is a nice move by the NCAA to step up and offer some help.

NCAA President commented on this pilot program through the release as well.

"ā€œChampionship experiences like the Final Four create memories of a lifetime for student-athletes, and we want to make sure their families are there to support and celebrate with them.ā€œFrom multiyear scholarships to opportunities to return to school and complete their degree on scholarship, we have been dedicated to further improving the student-athlete experience since our presidential retreat in August 2011. Providing travel expenses for student-athletes’ families is another example of this progress.ā€"

I agree with Emmert and say kudos to the NCAA on this move as in my opinion college football has improved leaps and bounds with the implementation of this playoff series. The buzz and the hype that has surrounded it has been pretty incredible and fun to watch. It is nice to see the NCAA finally moving forward and addressing the things that it needs to address.

The College Football Playoff National Championship will take place on Monday, January 12 at AT & T Stadium in Arlington, Texas at 8:30 p.m. ET on ESPN. The Oregon Ducks and the Ohio State Buckeyes will do battle to see who is the best college football team in the land.
