J.R. Smith is one of the newest members of the Cleveland Cavaliers after a flurry of NBA moves this week. The arena crew in Cleveland jabbed at Smith during his Cleveland debut.

It is J.R. Smith time in Cleveland, even if big-man enthusiasts might let Smith’s arrival be overshadowed by the fact that Cleveland also traded for center Timofey Mozgov on Tuesday.

In an intriguing trade in which a lot of talented but sometimes confusing players switched teams, the mercurial J.R. Smith joined LeBron James, Kyrie Irving, and Kevin Love in Cleveland. Granted, Smith’s arrival is happening while James is on the shelf with various injuries, but eventually all of those guys are going to have to co-exist.

Knowing that J.R. Smith is one of those guys who puts the “shooting” in shooting guard, it sounds like the arena productions team had some fun with him when he entered the game for the first time as a member of the Cavaliers.

As we certainly know by now, Smith’s inclination to shoot the ball a lot can cut both ways. On the one hand, when he gets hot he has the goods to carry a team by himself. That was something we saw back in his glory days as a member of the Denver Nuggets.

The flip side of that situation can be the fact that Smith can bring any team’s momentum to a halt by having the ball always stick in his hands and by taking really terrible shots. Worse yet, missing some bad shots almost never stops him from chucking up more bad shots.

It will be interesting to see how those tendencies play in Cleveland on a team that already has three guys who need a significant volume of touches. It is fodder for some teasing from the Cavaliers on this night, but it could be the source of legit frustration down the road for a team with championship aspirations.

J.R. Smith is in Cleveland, and apparently LeBron James was in favor of the move. We have seen how things have gone in the past when LeBron plays general manager, so there will certainly be plenty of eyes on Smith and how he fits in Cleveland with Dion Waiters now gone.

Smith, 29 years old, is averaging 10.9 points per game this season.
