Cowboys owner Jerry Jones compares Chris Christie to Nelson Mandela
By Sam Richmond
Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones suggested he feels the same honor being with Chris Christie that he did with Nelson Mandela. He probably wishes he could have that one back.
New Jersey Governor Chris Christie has taken a lot of heat from the public in recent days for his decision to sit in the box of Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones during the team’s playoff game Sunday against the Detroit Lions.

Naturally, Jones has been defending and praising Christie and his presence. On Tuesday, Jones said that Christie was part of the team’s mojo and that he wants the governor by his side when the team faces the Green Bay Packers on Sunday.
“He’s part of our mojo,” Jones said on 105.3 The Fan in Dallas. “I want him there all the way. I’ll tell you, if he’s got enough mojo to pull this thing out, he ought to be looked at as president of the United States.”
“I don’t know how we in any way can even think about going up there without having him with the way we’re playing and the mojo. I know I’m doing everything else the same way I’ve been doing it for several weeks.”
But Jones’ latest praising of Christie’s presence has gone too far. According to ESPN’s Bob Ley, Jones compared sitting next to Christie to sitting next to Nelson Mandela.
Whether or not you agree with Christie’s politics, that is a truly ridiculous statement by Jones. Nelson Mandela is one of the most important figures in world history, a true revolutionary that fought apartheid to the fullest extent.
No person in their right mind should compare Chris Christie to Nelson Mandela.
It’ll be interesting to see if Jones ultimately issues an apology or attempts to clarify exactly what he meant here because there is understandably a lot of people angry with him for these comments.
Jones’ Cowboys will take on the Packers this Sunday at 1:05 p.m. ET on FOX. Dallas went 12-4 in the regular season and beat the Lions 24-20 in the Wild Card Round. Green Bay went 12-4 and earned a first-round bye. Despite Jones’ urges for Christie to come to the contest, it’s unsure at the moment if the governor will be making the trip to Wisconsin.
