Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones assumes head coach Jason Garrett will stay with the team after his contract expires at the end of this season.

The Dallas Cowboys faced a tough decision regarding head coach Jason Garrett last offseason. After a third consecutive 8-8 season without a playoff appearance he was squarely on the chopping block.

The Cowboys decided to let him coach out his contract and decide what to do later, and Garrett delivered in the contract year leading the Cowboys to a 12-4 record, a mark tied for the best in the league.

The Cowboys won the NFC East crown and defeated the Detroit Lions in the Wild Card round of the playoffs.

It looks like Garrett has not only earned a new contract but a big raise as well, but there is no guarantee he will even stay in Dallas. Cowboys owner Jerry Jones doesn’t seemed too concerned about whether Garrett will stay or leave though.

“I just didn’t do it and didn’t want to do it, that is extend the contract,” Cowboys owner Jerry Jones said Wednesday on ESPN, via the Dallas Morning News. “Jason has been coaching under the same contract, actually for about seven years. I got tremendous confidence in Jason Garrett’s growth and how he has evolved as head coach.

“I didn’t think it was right to start the season. So I felt when the time is right, we’ll sit down and extend his contract. I’m glad that, not only for us but our fans, we’re having the year that we’re having because you pay a price. You always do for a coach that’s learning.”

“…Coaches grow, coaches evolve. I’m glad that we’re going to have a chance to have the benefit of the experience and the growth that Jason Garrett has shown.”
