Referee takes phone call in the middle of a game (Video)

One middle school basketball referee took a phone call during a game… the video is fantastic.

The internet may have just uncovered the worst youth referee of all-time.

Video is floating around of a middle school basketball game in Oak Harbor, Washington that shows a referee simply talking on the phone in the middle of the game.

You have to see this.

It turns out there is actually an explanation for this ref talking on the phone, as uncovered by Deadspin.

"We did some fact checking. Turns out the ref was calling his supervisor to report that a referee was needed at a crosstown game with 44 kids and no officials. Poor judgment to call during the game? Yes, but his intention was to help the other school. The referee organization has confirmed the call and is investigating the incident."

All right, so we’ll give the ref a little bit of a pass here. Still, he could have easily just called a timeout and delayed the game a bit to make the call. That’s a lot better than making a call in the middle of the game.

We’re sure the players from North Whidbey Middle School and Oak Harbor Middle School would have appreciated that.
