Arm Strength and Mechanics

Winston’s arm is decent, certainly above average and can range into the “good” category, but he doesn’t have a cannon. He can make all the throws he will need to in the NFL and puts decent velocity on the ball on short and intermediate routes. I think he puts too much air under his deep balls and hangs them a bit, but most college quarterbacks do that and it can be fixed. His delivery is a little long and whichever team drafts him will certainly want to shorten it but, again, that is fixable. He also has an over-the-top release that helps him put more “oomph” on passes when he needs it.

Winston’s mechanics get sloppy at times and that has held him back some in 2014. When he rushes things he can drop his elbow, which leads to floated passes. Additionally, he sometimes winds up too far back when throwing, which means he takes too long to release the ball. His footwork is also sloppy at times, but not alarmingly so. Basically, he’s a college quarterback who has a lot of the problems college quarterbacks have. Time with a dedicated, professional quarterbacks coach will help smooth out most of his issues with his release and mechanics.

Any concerns in this area can be cleaned up and shouldn’t hinder him much.
