Accuracy and Decision-making

Winston is typically pretty accurate with his throws when he makes the right read and delivers. His ball placement is a concern, since you’ll often see receivers having to slow down or reach behind them for passes. In the NFL that will get wideouts killed. But Winston has the ability to throw receivers open and shows great anticipation and knowledge of where his receivers will be.

In 2013 Winston was fantastic at not making risky throws and taking what the defense gave him. His accuracy is impressive in his tape from 2013. In 2014, he took far too many risks and that led to his high interception totals. He tried to fit too many balls into tight windows and just wasn’t as accurate in general. He was relying on his natural ability to carry him and he has to learn that it takes more than that to be a great quarterback.

Occasionally Winston will also make throws that leave you puzzled. Against Florida this season, he threw three interceptions in the first quarter of the game, all of which were terrible decisions and even worse throws (see here). He has to realize that those throws can have disastrous consequences against top-tier competition.
