Dallas Cowboys head coach Jason Garrett sent a text message to a cancer patient in the latest act to show how much the NFL cares.

There haven’t been a lot of happy and heartwarming stories throughout the NFL this season to counter the negative off-field attention the sport has seen. Most of the stories have been about domestic violence or arrests, but Dallas Cowboys head coach Jason Garrett helped lift the mood in today’s off-the-field NFL news.

Garrett went out of his way to send a text message to cancer patient’s wife, checking to see how he was doing and letting him know that he was in his prayers.

This is the type of story that fans like to read, and it reminds you of the humanity — and humility — that exists in football. It’s an act that puts a new light on  Garrett in the eyes of many, and it should make everyone feel a bit better inside.

Take a look at the text that Garrett sent to Jeremy’s wife:

Needless to say, the Cowboys are led by a very good person and Garrett made the news respectable for once. If more people throughout the NFL took this type of approach to their fame, the world would be a much better place.

Dallas is preparing for their biggest game of the season against the Green Bay Packers at Lambeau Field. It is going to be extremely cold and both teams are capable of making Super Bowl runs. But this story from Jason Garrett is one that is going to eclipse a win or a loss by the Cowboys.

There will be fans who are upset with Dallas and mad at Garrett if the team loses in Green Bay, but there are plenty of fans who won’t feel as upset as others. Not everyone of them was touched in a personal way like this by Garrett, but many fans will see this as a sign of the true person Garrett is away from the chalkboard and the playbook.

It’s not often that a man so polarizing is humanized in such a way, but alas Jason Garrett has never been an ordinary NFL character.
