What has San Francisco 49ers offensive lineman Jonathan Martin been doing in his offseason? Oh nothing, just saving Versace stores from shoplifters and being a local hero. The Niners lineman updated his Twitter account early Thursday evening with an interesting tweet that seemed to suggest that he may or may not be a superhero.

He followed it shortly after with this tweet:

As the story goes, the first shoplifter escaped, but Martin’s quick reaction helped security corral and subdue the second shoplifter. Martin later said he had no time to be scared, as everything happened so quickly.

“I didn’t even think,” Martin told Shutdown Corner via phone on Thursday night. “I just reacted. It wasn’t till later when [my friend] said, ‘He could have had a gun.’ I didn’t even think about it. I just wanted to help. It took maybe 30 seconds, Martin said about subduing the man. “It all happened so fast you don’t really think about it. You just sort of react.”

Martin appears to be the guy in the white shirt standing over the fallen shoplifter. According to Martin, he didn’t even think, but reacted to help security in apprehending one of two alleged shoplifters, which apparently means knocking the guy senseless.

It’s hard to imagine anyone questioning Martin’s toughness after this incident. The Niners’ offensive tackle was shopping at the Los Angeles area mall with a friend when he saw the shoplifting event in progress at the Versace store a few yards away from his position. One shoplifter had already grabbed three purses and was running out of the store when Martin saw another shoplifter in the process of grabbing further items.

Jonathan Martin was a second round draft pick by the Miami Dolphins in the 2012 NFL draft and shortly thereafter became involved in a bullying scandal with the Dolphins. His teammates, specifically Richie Incognito, were accused of continued harassment and bullying that led to him eventually leaving the team. This last season was Martin’s first with the 49ers. He played in 15 games total in 2014, with nine of them being starts.
