The New England Patriots and safety Patrick Chung agreed to a three-year contract extension.

Patrick Chung has been one of the most consistent players on the New England Patriots’ defense, and he has been rewarded for that consistent play. New England agreed to a three-year contract extension that is worth up to $8.2 million with $3.4 million of that guaranteed.

New England is currently sitting in the NFL Playoffs preparing to face off against the Baltimore Ravens as the number one seed in the AFC. It wasn’t too long ago that many were saying that Tom Brady wasn’t an elite quarterback anymore and that the Patriots should look to rebuild while they still can. Those critics have been proven wrong and the Patriots appear to be legitimate Super Bowl contenders once again.

Chung finished this past season with 85 total tackles, an interception, and seven defensed passes. He isn’t quite the playmaker that other safeties around the league are, but he is a sure tackler and a leader as well.

The Patriots’ defense was very solid all-around this past season, ranking 17th in the NFL against the pass and ninth in the league in run defense. Chung was a big part of both of those rankings, and the Patriots will need their defense to step up throughout the playoffs if they want a chance at another title.

At 27 years of age, Chung is just entering the prime of his career and his best years are within reaching distance. New England made a very team friend deal with him, and they will be getting a very solid and consistent starting safety for all three of the years that they extended him for.

It will be interesting to see whether or not he continues improving now that he has a nice extension, or whether he slacks off a bit with the money he made himself. The Patriots need him to continue playing the style of football that earned him that paycheck, and that is likely what they are going to get from him.
