The St. Louis Post Dispatch reported that the city of St. Louis is set to deliver the Rams a new stadium on the banks of the Mississippi River that would open by 2020. The stadium, although mainly for football, could be used for soccer and would host 64,000 for football and roughly 34,000 for soccer.
Last week it was reported that the Rams owner Stan Kroenke plans to build a football stadium in a suburb near Los Angeles.
The Rams used to call Los Angeles home in the early ’90s and moved to St. Louis in 1995.
According to reports, Kroenke has until January 28 to make his current 30 year lease with the Edward Jones dome a year-to-year agreement.
Jim Thomas of the Post-Dispatch reports that the stadium will cost between $860-$900 million to build.
Former Anheuser-Busch executive David Peacock revealed the plans during a press conference and said it will not add a new tax burden to the community. He also said Kroenke and the league would each pay $200 million in the proposal, according to Thomas.
The city has moved pretty quick in getting the work done to keep the Rams in St. Louis and — from the look of things — they may be able to do so.
According to the reports of the stadium it looks like this can be a win for everyone involved. The area where the stadium is proposed to be located needs a renovation and is very underutilized, and the effort should provide plenty of jobs to the area for the next five or so years.
