Former SEC Defensive Player of the Year and the first openly gay NFL draft pick, Michael Sam, is engaged to his longtime boyfriend, Vito Cammisano.

Michael Sam made history as the first openly gay draft pick in NFL history last year when the St. Louis Rams spend a seventh round pick on the former Missouri Tiger and if Sam plays for an NFL team in 2015, he’ll be the first openly gay married man.

Sam and his longtime boyfriend, Vito Cammisano, were engaged while on a European holiday and according to Emily Smith and Julie Gordon of Page Six of the New York Post the question was popped in Rome. Cammisano was with Sam during the pre-draft process when cameras captured he and Sam sharing a highly-publicized kiss after the Rams drafted him last May.

No word on who got down on one knee and proposed, but the couple has been traveling across Europe to ring in the New Year. They first traveled to Spain for New Year’s before traveling to Italy, the Vatican City and Rome all while sharing some of their vacation photos on each other’s Instagram pages.

Sam didn’t make the final 53-man roster of the Rams despite a strong preseason where he showed the ability to get to the quarterback and was released. He didn’t stay on the streets long as the Dallas Cowboys added the former SEC Defensive Player of the Year to their practice squad.

He was cut from the practice squad on Oct. 21 before having the opportunity to make history as the first openly gay player to appear in a regular season game.

Sam is currently a free agent and free to sign with any team and it wouldn’t be surprising to see some team take a chance on him in the offseason and see if he can help as a defensive end in a 4-3 defense or if he has made any progress in his ability to be an outside linebacker in a 3-4 scheme.

We likely haven’t seen the last of Sam who I’d imagine gets a look in minicamps and training camp this spring and summer, but if he doesn’t make a roster at least he’ll have more free time to plan his upcoming wedding.
