Redskins’ general manager Scot McCloughan was introduced as the NFL’s newest GM in Washington this week. He wasted little time ingratiating himself with the media.

The Washington Redskins have a new general manager. Owner Dan Snyder and team president Bruce Allen introduced Scot McCloughan as their new GM this week. In his first days on the job, McCloughan proved himself to be a wise man indeed.

These are tumultuous times for the Washington professional football team. “Franchise quarterback” Robert Griffin III is a mess, the roster lacks talent and depth, head coach Jay Gruden just got done with a rough first year filled mostly with chippy press conferences, and Snyder still looms above it all as a meddlesome owner.

Scot McCloughan has his work cut out for him. That’s not even to mention the fact that he has to deal with an impatient local press and the fact that the Redskins made lots of news off the field this season because of their interactions with the media.

In a smart move, McCloughan brought everybody in the media pizza and cookies this week.

What do you do if you want people to like you? Bring pizza and cookies. This might not be a universal rule, but it is pretty darn close.

In college residential life offices nationwide, leaders are trying to figure out how they can actually get students to attend ‘movie night’ in the dormitories. The answer? Pizza and cookies.

In human resources offices nationwide, managers are trying to figure out the best way to get employees to come to an event to take a survey about common concerns on the job. The answer? Pizza and cookies.

Scot McCloughan tried to figure out how to get off on the right foot with the media before he tries to rebuild one of the highest profile franchises in the NFL. The answer? Pizza and cookies.

You get the point.

Prior to being hired in Washington, McCloughan was the general manager of the San Francisco 49ers and then a senior personnel executive for the Seattle Seahawks. He was with San Francisco from 2005-2010 and with Seattle from 2011-2014.

That experience would seem to indicate a man who knows what he is doing when it comes to personnel. What McCloughan showed this week, however, was a fluency in how to deal with non-football issues. Call it silly if you want, but that might be just as important to his success in Washington.
