Hall of Famer Troy Aikman would take Dallas Cowboys passer Tony Romo over any other quarterback left in the NFL playoffs.

The Dallas Cowboys won the NFC East with a 12-4 record after years of 8-8 records and nearly missing the playoffs. The Cowboys found themselves behind the Detroit Lions in the Wild Card round but came from behind thanks to a late touchdown pass from Tony Romo to Terrance Williams.

Former Cowboys quarterback Troy Aikman thinks that there might not be any quarterback hotter at this moment in the NFL playoffs than Tony Romo. In fact, if Aikman were pressed to pick one of the eight quarterbacks left, he’d take Romo.

“I’ll tell you, right now, from what I’ve seen this year – just talking about this year – I’d probably take (Tony) Romo,” Aikman told USA TODAY Sports. “I’ve seen him make too many plays when he’s had to make them this year and he’s made them.”

That is high praise considering the fact that there are five Super Bowl winning quarterbacks in that field, including all-time greats like Peyton Manning and Tom Brady.

Aikman specifically cited Romo’s ability to manage the game and not force things like he might have in year’s past.

“I think he’s learned that there’s a lot to the position, and that every possession doesn’t require you having to make a big play or something spectacular. He’s really done a nice job of that all season long. He hasn’t forced the ball down the field for big plays. He’s been willing to take what has been there.

“And then with the coaching, they’ve taken some of the control away from him at the line of scrimmage. So, he’s not checking to passes when run plays are called. He’s had to rely a little more on the running game, and the defense has been better than expected. So, he hasn’t been playing from a deficit. The surrounding cast has improved, but his decision-making has improved as well.”

Hard to deny Aikman’s point, especially given the success he has had this season particularly on the road. Romo at times seemed almost too cautious against the Lions, but the Cowboys would prefer that than any unnecessary turnovers.

The real test will come on Sunday, and if Romo can lead the Cowboys back to the NFC Championship game.
