Baseball Hall of Famer Hank Aaron is part of a group bidding to buy the Atlanta Hawks.

The “Hammerin” part of Hank Aaron has always been tied-in with glory-filled moments on the baseball diamond. Now it appears the nickname might also make its way onto the courts of the NBA.

According to Marc Stein of ESPN, Aaron has reportedly joined a group of team owners from the NBA, Major League Soccer and Italian soccer’s Serie A. They are currently bidding on the available Atlanta Hawks as they became available after Bruce Levenson decided to sell his interest in the team after those racially charged emails surfaced in 2012.

Memphis Grizzlies minority owner Steve Kaplan is the leader of this group which includes former Grizzlies CEO Jason Levien, the current managing general partner of MLS club DC United Indonesian media magnates Erick Thohir, and Handy Poernomo Soetedjo.

The man who once held the MLB home-run record for 33 years enjoyed most of his career in Atlanta.

His record-breaking 715 home-run came in the city of Atlanta:

In what is one of the most fascinating and heart-warming moments in sports history, two fans ran onto the field to greet Aaron as he rounded second-base for that 715th career bomb.

Atlanta fans could now be hoping that Aaron begins another career as having a prominent role in Atlanta sports.

The Hawks have been one of the more surprising teams in the NBA thus far. Their 29-8 record ranks them tied with the most wins in the league and first in the Eastern Conference.
