Cole Hamels has been the subject of numerous MLB trade rumors for the last year or so, but nothing is happening now between the Philadelphia Phillies and any potentially interested teams.
This off-season is kind of strange in Major League Baseball. There is elite starting pitching available to be acquired, yet teams only seem interested in executing crazy unexpected trades for position players.

Seriously, does nobody want to sign Max Scherzer or James Shields? What about trading for Phillies’ ace Cole Hamels? Does nobody want to see if they can push the right buttons and land a legit left-handed ace from the flailing Philadelphia front office?
The answer is no, apparently, at least for now. It might be that teams are waiting for another domino to fall to yield a better sense of the market, but the inactivity will only feel stranger the later we get into January.
In the case of Cole Hamels and his trade market, the team that seemed the most interested was the Boston Red Sox. Perhaps they will circle back on those talks, but for now, there is nothing happening between the Phillies and Red Sox on a potential deal.
According to Nick Cafardo of the Boston Globe:
"There have been no talks this month between the Phillies and Red Sox, according to a major league source. The Red Sox will not part with Mookie Betts or Blake Swihart. The Phillies would need to get one of the two for Hamels to make a deal they feel comfortable with, and the Red Sox haven’t budged."
Cafardo goes on to say that the Phillies have gotten “sniffs” from West coast teams, presumably in an effort to find a new weird way to describe exploratory interest or preliminary discussions on a player. One can only “kick the tires” so many times, you know?
While the Phillies are willing to listen on Hamels, they do not seem to feel like they have to trade him. Given that lack of urgency, it has felt like the status of a potential trade this winter was “Red Sox or bust,” especially after the Chicago Cubs signed Jon Lester.
The Red Sox have been mentioned as a possible landing spot for Scherzer or Shields, with their interest in Shields especially noteworthy. If they miss on both guys, however, they very well might re-engage the Phillies.
Save for that or for some more serious “sniffing” from the secret West coast teams, it sounds like the Phillies will be keeping Hamels for the start of 2015.
