The search for the next head coach of the Chicago Bears could be coming to a close very soon with Todd Bowles scheduled to have a second interview.

Todd Bowles is a wanted man and the Chicago Bears want to bring in the Arizona Cardinals defensive coordinator for a second interview later this week, according to the Chicago Sun Times.

Bowles interviewed for the position last Thursday with new general manager Ryan Pace literally moments after Pace was hired.

The Bears will interview Lions defensive coordinator Teryl Austin on Tuesday and could have some interest in John Fox who was let go in Denver on Monday evening.

Scheduling the interview for Bowles could be a tricky one considering he already has lined up second interviews with the Atlanta Falcons and New York Jets.

The Cardinals had one of the better defenses in the NFL this season, ranking fifth in scoring defense, allowing only 18.7 points per game despite injuries to the front seven. Bowles unit did have some warts as he unit faltered down the stretch defending the run and finished ranked 13th, allowing 108.7 yards per game after leading the league earlier in the season.

Arizona’s pass defense ranked 29th in the NFL, allowing 259.5 yards per game despite Pro Bowl cornerback Patrick Peterson, Tyrann Mathieu and first round pick Deone Bucannon.

The Bears defense has been historically bad the last two years with Mel Tucker running the defense for Marc Trestman and have a number of holes to address in free agency and the draft, but certainly is not as talented as the one Bowles had in the desert.

Bowles, 51, has a background as a former defensive backs coach before earning his promotion to defensive coordinator with the Philadelphia Eagles in 2012 before joining Bruce Arians’ staff in Arizona in the same position in 2013.
