Dallas Cowboys head coach Jason Garrett is now a free agent and the NFL’s hottest commodity for teams with a head coaching vacancy.

Jason Garrett’s Dallas Cowboys days could be over. With Dallas officially eliminated from the NFL Playoffs, Garrett could be on the way out. Per Adam Schefter, the Dallas head coach is now a free agent and available to sign with any team.

As Schefter pointed out, five teams are still looking for a head coach. Garrett would be a great edition to any team and could easily make them a contender. Likewise, coaching a team with a less focal owner than Jerry Jones could be a breath of fresh air.

Garrett has been with the Cowboys since 2007. He was offensive coordinator from 2007-2010 before being named head coach in 2011. He took over as interim head coach in 2010 after Wade Phillips was fired following a 1-7 start. Garrett finished the 2010 season 5-3 as the Cowboys finished 6-10. For the next four seasons, the Cowboys went 8-8 before finally having a breakout season going 12-4 and winning the NFC East.

After a successful 2014 campaign, Jones should be doing everything in his power to retain Garrett. This wouldn’t be the first time the Dallas head coach has had interest from other teams. This season’s success should earn Garrett at least one interview from a team. Arguably, he’s the best option that is available and teams won’t have to ask for permission to interview him due to his contract ending at the end of the season.

On one hand, Dallas would be foolish to not retain Garrett. After four mediocre 8-8 finishes, the Cowboys finally had a winning season and had much hope. Tony Romo’s December was one worth remembering instead of another disappointment to forget. Likewise, Garrett is familiar with the Cowboys system and already has the respect of the front office. He also seems to have a good chemistry with the players especially with Romo.

At the same time, it may be time for Garrett to take his services out of the state of Texas. It appears he has figured out his coaching scheme and how to run a successful side. Likewise, he knows how to turn a team around after a disappointing season. Teams like the Chicago Bears and New York Jets are looking for a fresh start and new beginnings. Garrett could be that guy for either side, but they aren’t the only two teams that need a new coach.

It appears that Garrett could have six offers on the table and that it could become a bidding war for one of the hottest commodities on the market.
