John Fox and the Denver Broncos mutually agreed to part ways so could a reunion take place with Mike Shanahan in the Mile High city?

The Denver Broncos made the surprising decision to part ways with head coach John Fox as well as his coaching staff that includes offensive coordinator Adam Gase and defensive coordinator after losing to the Indianapolis Colts in the AFC Divisional Playoff game on Sunday.

Moments after the news broke that Fox and his staff were out the name of former Broncos head coach who led the Broncos to two Super Bowls with John Elway came up as a potential successor.

Shanahan has been mentioned as a potential candidate with the Chicago Bears because of his prior relationship with Bears quarterback Jay Cutler, but his relationship with Elway, the Broncos Executive Vice President of Football Operations and General Manager predates Cutler.

But as soon as the possibility entered people’s minds it was squashed by NFL Media Insider Ian Rapoport who tweeted the Broncos will not be considering Shanahan for the head coaching vacancy, but they do have interest in Seattle Seahawks defensive coordinator Dan Quinn.

Shanahan was an assistant in Denver from 1984-1987, 1990-1991 and the team’s head coach from 1995-2001. He compiled a 138-86 record with the Broncos and has a 170-138 career record.

Going back to Shanahan would have been an odd choice but this team is built to win now so a veteran head coach is something that would seem to make sense.

Considering Peyton Manning’s age and health the Broncos may be wise to avoid a candidate with zero prior head coaching experience such as Quinn or other candidates who will have their name bandied about in the coming days.

Rarely will you see a staff jettisoned like the Broncos who could have Fox, Gase and Del Rio hired as head coaches elsewhere and likely won’t be on the street very long.
