The Denver Broncos parted ways with head coach John Fox and his coaching staff one day after losing in the AFC Divisional Playoffs to the Indianapolis Colts.
Fox doesn’t plan on retiring or even sitting out a year and has interest in coaching the Chicago Bears, according to Rich Campbell and Dan Wiederer of The Chicago Tribune.
"“A two-way courtship between the Bears and Fox would not be surprising, given his history with Bears consultant Ernie Accorsi and his link to Pace through mutual friend Sean Payton.”"
Fox, 59, was the defensive coordinator of the New York Giants from in 1998 when Accorsi was the team’s general manager and stayed in New York until 2002 when he was named the head coach of the Carolina Panthers.
Sean Payton who helped launch new Bears general manager Ryan Pace’s career was on the staff in New York for three years so it would stand to reason that Payton would endorse Fox if asked his thoughts on his former co-worker.
Fox has won six division titles in 13 seasons as a coach, compiling a career record of 119-89 (.572) with the Panthers and Broncos. He took the Panthers to the Super Bowl in 2003 and the Broncos to the big game last year, although he lost both games. He has an 8-7 playoff record in his career.
“I am eager to continue my coaching career and look forward to the opportunities that lie ahead,” Fox said in a statement issued by the Broncos.
That opportunity could find him in Chicago, but he has to get in line behind Todd Bowles who the Bears want in for a second interview this week, Fox’s former offensive coordinator, Adam Gase and Seahawks defensive coordinator Dan Quinn. All three of them have interviewed for the job already and the team will interview Lions defensive coordinator Teryl Austin on Tuesday.
If the Bears hire Fox it would be the first time in franchise history that they have hired a coach with previous NFL head coaching experience.
What do you think Bears fans, should Fox be the No. 1 target on Pace’s wish list of potential head coaching candidates or do you want a young and upcoming coordinator to get the job?
