The Oakland Raiders are reportedly seeking a second interview with Denver Broncos defensive coordinator Jack Del Rio.

With the Denver Broncos seeing a swift, unexpected end to their season on Sunday, the teams still seeking head coaching candidates are already swooping in for leftovers. That starts with the division foe Oakland Raiders, who are reportedly seeking a second interview with defensive coordinator Jack Del Rio, per ESPN’s Adam Schefter.

Del Rio would bring a wealth of experience to the woefully inexperienced Raiders roster. He was head coach of the Jacksonville Jaguars for nine seasons before being fired. He was then hired by the Denver Broncos to be the defensive coordinator in what must have felt like a dream job for the better part of the last three seasons.

Not only did Del Rio get to run a defense that played opposite Peyton Manning, but he was able to get whatever he felt he needed to improve the defense. The Broncos signed Aqib Talib and DeMarcus Ware this offseason to go with what was already a deep, talented defense.

None of that was enough though for Del Rio or the Broncos to keep things rolling toward another Super Bowl appearance. The team lost at home, 24-13, to the Indianapolis Colts in their first playoff game of the year. With Manning turning 39 and the rest of the defense potentially pushing the team salary into cap hell, this might be a good year for Del Rio to once again branch out and consider his options as a head coach.

The Raiders would benefit from the defensive prowess of Del Rio, but it’s hard to tell if they’d start winning as a result. The Jaguars never really pulled out of their mired situation under Del Rio’s tutelage and this Raiders team looks like plenty of Jaguars squads during Del Rio’s tenure. The team is low on high-end talent and experience, but they could also offer a proving ground for Del Rio.

Fortunately for the coaching candidate, the Raiders at least have some semblance of an answer at quarterback, thanks to promising rookie Derek Carr. This could be a tempting job for a defensive coach who knows he’s a decent defense away from potentially challenging for a playoff spot.
