Washington Nationals outfielder Bryce Harper is reportedly still a bachelor—a big deal because as of Jan. 2, he wasn’t supposed to be one anymore.

It was a sad tale—boy meets girl, boy gets drafted and makes millions of dollars, boy delivers reply to reporter that will live forever in memes, boy loses girl.

That may not be the entire sequence of events, but according to a report, Washington Nationals outfielder Bryce Harper did not marry his longtime girlfriend/fiancee Kayla Varner on Jan. 2 as planned.

The Washington Post reported that, by all visible signs (read: social media), the wedding is off.

Yes, The Washington Post reported on a baseball player’s breakup. Feel free to stock up on bottled water and non-perishable food items.

Social media was big in the courtship of the 22-year-old Las Vegas natives.

Or at least it was until a couple of months ago. According to the post, the last couple-related post from either Harper or Varner was a photo posted by Varner of the couple on Nov. 30, a day after she chronicled her bridal shower on Instagram.

Now neither follows the other on Twitter, they have changed their online biographies to remove references to each other.

It’s just so sad. Yet each seems to be taking it well, at least their social media selves do.

Harper posted this on New Year’s Eve:

Varner’s latest social media post had something to do with a dog grooming.

The couple had actually planned two weddings—a ceremony at a Mormon temple in San Diego and a second ceremony the following day.

Call it an 0-for-2 day at the plate for Harper.

Varner recently finished her NCAA eligibility as a soccer player at Ohio State, scoring three goals in 19 games for the Buckeyes, who went 6-10-3.

She was on Ohio State’s NCAA tournament team as a junior in 2013 after playing two years at BYU.

Varner also holds the Nevada state high-school record with 85 assists in her career at Green Valley High School, where she scored 111 career goals and was a two-time state player of the year.

Harper had a strong finish to an injury-plagued 2014 campaign with the Nationals, hitting .305/.358/.503 with nine homers in his last 43 games.

Overall, he hit .273/.344/.423 with 13 homers and 32 RBI in 100 games.

Harper was the 2012 National League Rookie of the Year and was an All-Star in 2012 and 2013 and was 5-for-17 with three home runs in the Nationals’ four-game loss to the San Francisco Giants in the National League Division Series last October.

No word whether ABC wants Harper to be the next guy after the current farmer dude on The Bachelor.
