Mo Williams has broken the Minnesota TimberWolves franchise record for points scored in a single game. Williams finished tonight’s game against the Indiana Pacers with 52 points, grabbing his last four points at the free throw line. The best part, the automatic assumption is that he broke Kevin Garnett’s record, but no, Corey Brewer was the previous record holder with 51 points, eat your heart out KG.
Williams is just the newest, strange, addition to the 50-point club joining the likes of Tony Delk, Corey Brewer, Terrence Ross, and Andre Miller. This doesn’t take anything away from what Williams was able to do tonight as there are plenty of hall of famers in the 50-point club but there’s a handful of unexpected names in it as well.
Williams outburst came at the perfect time, ending the Wolves 15 game losing streak and giving Minnesota their first victory of 2015. Had the Wolves not won tonight, it was a real possibility that the Wolves were going to reach their franchise record losing streak of 18 games in a row making it kind of ironic that it took a franchise record to prevent a, more negative, franchise record.
Still, not sure anybody expected Mo Williams to be the guy saving the Wolves. It’s not that he’s a bad player, Williams just didn’t seem like the player that would step up here. Hell, it would have been less shocking if Andrew Wiggins had been the guy to explode instead and he’s a rookie.
As with any high scoring night, Williams made a few shots tonight that he usually doesn’t make. One shot in particular was so insane it left Paul George flabbergasted.
Yes Paul, we know exactly how you feel.
