Report: Dallas Cowboys, Jason Garrett closing in on new deal
By Evan Massey
The Dallas Cowboys and head coach Jason Garrett are closing in on a new five-year contract.
Jason Garrett helped take the Dallas Cowboys to a 12-4 record and an NFC East division title this past season, and also led the team to a playoff win over the Detroit Lions. Unfortunately, the Cowboys fell to the Green Bay Packers on the road by a final score of 26-21 in the Divisional round of the playoffs this past Sunday.
Dallas seems to be on the right track, and they want to keep Garrett around long-term. According to a report from Albert Breer of the NFL Network, the Cowboys are closing in on a new five-year contract with Garrett.
Garrett has coached the Cowboys for five seasons now after taking over during the 2010 season, and has compiled a 41-31 record. He had gone through three straight 8-8 seasons, but the Cowboys found their way in 2014. Having a healthy DeMarco Murray was the biggest difference for this year’s team, and Dez Bryant has been emerging as one of the best receivers in the game as well.

There is quite a split in Dallas about Garrett, but most fans want to see him stick around. Jerry Jones has always been very supportive of Garrett, and it isn’t surprising at all that he is closing in on a new deal to return to the Cowboys.
It is going to be very interesting to see whether or not the Cowboys can keep their recent success going next year. They still need to do some work on the defensive side of the football, and they’ll have to figure out a way to re-sign both Bryant and Murray as well. Bringing Garrett back just might be the right move.
All of that being said, the Cowboys’ offense is just getting started, as news of this new deal for their head coach comes through. They have a lot of work ahead of them, but Garrett has already shown the ability to coach them above their talent. While the Cowboys had a big season this year, there weren’t many that thought they would be capable of doing anything close to what they did.
Re-signing Garrett was one of their top priorities, but now that they have that all but done, they can focus on improving the roster to make an even bigger run next season.
