Bill Callahan likely moving on from Dallas Cowboys
By Scott Allen
Bill Callahan said to be leaving the Dallas Cowboys the same week other staff received extensions
It’s not always the title in the NFL that keeps a coach, a good coach, in his position. Sometimes it is all about what you are allowed to do in your position. In the case of Dallas Cowboys offensive coordinator Bill Callahan it sounds like he’s leaving because of what he can’t do with the Cowboys.

In a week where head coach Jason Garrett and assistants Rod Marinelli and Scott Linehan are getting contract extensions, Callahan is likely headed elsewhere. The big problem? He wants to be the play caller. He does not get that opportunity in Dallas.
After one of the more successful seasons in recent memory for the Cowboys at 12-4, you have to wonder why break up a good thing now? However Callahan wants to take advantage of offers from other teams to be their play caller.
Per Dallas Morning News, Callahan has at least eight teams interested in him. Two of those teams identified are the Cleveland Browns and the Jacksonville Jaguars. The Browns are considered a likely landing spot for Callahan.
They say the grass isn’t always greener on the other side but for an offensive coordinator having the control to call your own plays has to be an important thing to many. It appears the Browns would give him that opportunity.
If Callahan leaves the Cowboys, Linehan is likely to be named the offensive coordinator. The Cowboys offense was seventh in the NFL in yards-per-game. They had 386.3 yards-per-game in the regular season.
If Callahan goes to the Browns, it could be considered a huge upgrade. Kyle Shanahan left the Browns last week. The Browns were 23rd in the NFL in offense at 324.6 yards-per-game. He could be a boon for quarterback Johnny Manziel.
Callahan knows Browns coach Mike Pettine very well. They were both assistants under Rex Ryan with the New York Jets from 2009-2011.
The Browns are expected to interview two other offensive coordinator candidates this week. Marc Trestman was interviewed on Wednesday. He was fired by the Chicago Bears the day after the regular season ended. The other candidate is Oakland Raiders quarterbacks coach John DeFilippo. He is expected to be interviewed on Wednesday.
My money is on Callahan getting the gig. The relationship Callahan and Pettine have and the success the Cowboys had this year should be the biggest reasons why Callahan gets the job over the other two.
